Keeping your favourite pair of trainers looking their best can be as simple as washing them in your washing machine. Quick, easy and efficient. Here’s our step-by-step guide to how to clean trainers in the washing machine.

Step 1: Preparation

Remove laces and insoles and set them aside to wash separately. Before putting your trainers straight into the washing machine, remove as much dirt or debris as you can. Then, grab a soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush and gently scrub the outsole (bottom part of the trainer) to remove dirt and grime. There is no need for chemical shoe cleaners, sprays or aerosols . Just water is fine.

Step 2: Target Key Areas

If really dirty, apply a small section of WABLU Laundry Sheet directly onto targeted areas. For extra stain removal, combine equal parts bicarbonate of soda and percarbonate of soda and apply directly onto stained area. Not only will this help to remove stains it will help to eliminate odours. Leave to work its magic! You can even add to your washing machine with the cleaning paste on!

Step 3: Wash in the Washing Machine

Wash your trainers on a gentle, low heat cycle with a low spin. A delicate cycle is probably your best bet for cleaning trainers in a washing machine. Laundry sheets are perfect because they dissolve completely at 20 degrees. Heat is the main culprit to potential damage, it also fixes stains into fabrics. For best results, place inside mesh bags to prevent damage.

Step 4: Drying

Finally allow your trainers to air dry! Don’t be tempted to put them in the tumble dryer. Newspaper and the airing cupboard work well. For most trainers, this will probably take at least 8 hours, so best to leave overnight! Ensure your shoes are completely dry before reinserting the insoles and definitely before wearing them.

And there you go! A guide to how to clean trainers in the washing machine. Washing your shoes in the washing machine is not only convenient but also environmentally friendly, as it eliminates the need for harsh chemicals and excessive water usage. Your shoes and planet will thank you!
